Training Camp is nearing its end and one of the last Huzzahs was partaking in a war of squads for ultimate squad supremacy.

My squad is one of the more aged squads so going into this I was not expecting much, truth be told.

There were four main events, and me and another were chosen to represent the squad in the only 2-person event named “David & Goliath”. I did not believe myself the best for this role, but I abided by the squads wishes and determined to play the role to the best of my ability.

Looking at another squad, they had a person who was a true Goliath. This was a big guy. I had the 3rd event and by the time it was my time to shine my squad had performed admirably enough putting us near 2nd or 3rd place of 5 squads. This put a lot of pressure on me and my David, however, as the results here could push us higher or lower with only one event left afterwards.

What I lacked in size and strength against the other Goaliths I had hoped to make up for in pure intimidation so I went into the ring and put on a show, with my only hope being not to instantly embarrass the squad.

Nobody knew what to expect going into the event but what it ended up turning into was a 10 minute pool noodle slapping fest. After which there was still no apparent winner or loser from any of the squads.

The judges then transformed the event into an egg toss and by some miracle of Jesus me and my David where able to make some amazing catches and throws but on the last toss it breaks into my hand. The remaining squad, however, ends up missing their catch as well and so we went into a 1v1 sudden death match up.

My squad asks me who should be our champion and I point at my David and say “This man is the heart and soul of our squad, he will take it.”

Each squad champion is required to throw a ball near a tree about 100 meters away and my David throws a beautiful ball that I likely could not have beaten. The other squad makes their attempt and it’s immediately apparent that we placed 1st in this event which was a first for our squad.

I went into the event just hoping not to embarrass me and my squad and we ended up taking first for the event. My squad then went on to place 2nd overall and I am extremely proud of that placement for this aged, rough rag-tag group of future missionaries…

One response to “Go-liath”

  1. Haha! Loved reading this story. You and your David (Kevin) truly killed it, and boosted squad spirit and morale! We were all hype screaming from the sidelines! Thank you for serving your team, even when you were unsure of yourself!
